About Lemn Sissay...

Lemn Sissay OBE is a celebrated British-Ethiopian poet, playwright, broadcaster, and advocate for diversity and inclusion. Born in 1967 in Wigan, England, to an Ethiopian mother, Sissay's early life was marked by adversity. Placed into foster care and later into children's homes, he faced numerous challenges that profoundly influenced his work and advocacy.

Sissay's literary journey began at 17 when he self-published his first poetry pamphlet, Perceptions of the Pen. By 21, he had released his first book of poetry, Tender Fingers in a Clenched Fist, establishing himself as a powerful voice in contemporary literature. His works often explore themes of identity, belonging, and social justice, drawing from his personal experiences.

Beyond writing, Sissay has made significant contributions to broadcasting and public speaking. He served as the official poet for the 2012 London Olympics and has presented various programs on BBC Radio. His compelling storytelling and eloquence have made him a sought-after speaker on topics such as mental health, resilience, and the experiences of those in the care system.

In recognition of his services to literature and charity, Sissay was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010 and later elevated to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021. He also served as Chancellor of the University of Manchester from 2015 to 2022, using his platform to advocate for educational access and support for marginalized communities.

Sissay's memoir, My Name Is Why, published in 2019, offers an unflinching account of his upbringing in the care system and his search for identity. The book has been lauded for its honesty and has further cemented his role as a leading voice in discussions around race, identity, and systemic inequality in the UK.

Through his multifaceted career, Lemn Sissay continues to inspire and challenge audiences, using his personal narrative to shed light on broader societal issues and advocate for a more inclusive and compassionate society.
