About Ade Adepitan...
Ade Adepitan MBE is a trailblazing British Paralympian, broadcaster, and disability advocate whose multifaceted career has made him a prominent figure in both sports and media. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1973, Adepitan contracted polio as an infant, resulting in the loss of function in his legs. At the age of three, he moved to East London with his family, where he began his journey towards becoming an elite athlete and influential public figure.
Adepitan's athletic prowess led him to represent Great Britain in wheelchair basketball, securing a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Paralympics and a gold at the 2005 Paralympic World Cup. His success on the court paved the way for a broadcasting career, where he became one of the UK's first physically disabled television presenters. Over the past two decades, he has hosted a range of programmes, including BBC's The Travel Show and Africa with Ade Adepitan, as well as Channel 4's Paralympic coverage.
Beyond his professional achievements, Adepitan is a passionate advocate for disability rights and inclusion. He supports various charities, such as Go Kids Go and Right to Play, and uses his platform to challenge societal perceptions of disability. His contributions have been recognised with numerous honours, including an MBE in 2005 for services to disability sport and honorary doctorates from Loughborough University and the University of East London.
In 2024, Adepitan was appointed Chancellor of Birmingham City University, succeeding Sir Lenny Henry, further cementing his role as a leader in education and advocacy. He resides in London with his wife, Scottish singer Linda Harrison (known professionally as Elle Exxe), and their son, Bolla. Adepitan continues to inspire through his work, promoting a message of resilience, diversity, and empowerment across all facets of his life.
