About George the Poet...

George the Poet, born George Mpanga in 1991 in Neasden, London, is a British spoken-word artist, rapper, and podcast host known for his lyrical social commentary on British life. Of Ugandan heritage, he began rapping at 15 and later studied politics, psychology, and sociology at the University of Cambridge. Initially signed to Island Records, he transitioned from music to spoken-word poetry to address broader social and political issues.

Mpanga gained significant recognition after being invited to read a love poem at the 2018 royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. His critically acclaimed podcast, Have You Heard George's Podcast?, blends storytelling, music, and social commentary, earning him a Peabody Award in 2019.

In 2024, he published Track Record: Me, Music and the War on Blackness, a part-memoir, part-treatise exploring Black artistry and history. The book delves into systemic racism, the commercialization of Black culture, and Mpanga's personal journey, urging re-education and empowerment within the global Black community.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Mpanga is a vocal political activist and diversity and inclusion speaker. He regularly addresses issues such as racism, equality, and discrimination, aiming to educate and inspire audiences. In 2018, he was appointed as a Member of the National Council of Arts Council England, contributing to the promotion of diversity in the arts.

Currently, Mpanga is pursuing a PhD at University College London, researching how Black music can be used across the Black world for a better future. He continues to use his platform to challenge societal norms and advocate for systemic change.
