One of the brightest prospects in British tennis, Emma Raducanu was the star of Wimbledon this year. Here, we take a look at how she got there…

Who is Emma Raducanu?

Emma Raducanu is an 18-year-old British tennis player. Born in Toronto, she has lived in the UK since 2004 and started playing tennis when she was just five years old.

Since then, she has won numerous titles and awards, and this year, played in Wimbledon as a wildcard, becoming the youngest British woman to make the round of 16 in the Open Era.

Fresh from her A-Level exams studying maths and economics, she came into Wimbledon ranked No. 338 in the world, and now features in the top 250.

Let’s take a look at her career in tennis...

Early career

Emma showed natural talent for tennis from an early age, winning UK National Champion titles at 9U, 12U and 16U. She also secured a bronze medal at the 12U Winter European Cup and won a Tennis Europe event in the 11U at Bressuire, 12U at Braga and 14U at Zoetermeer.

Emma earned her first Junior International Tennis Federation (ITF) title when she had just turned 13, which is the youngest you’re allowed to compete.

Although Emma was beaten by Harriet Dart in the opening round of the Viking Open Nottingham, she reached the quarter-finals of the Nottingham Trophy. She was then handed a wildcard to The Championships Women’s Singles draw and made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon.

Emma advanced to the fourth-round scoring wins over Vitalia Diatchenko, Marketa Vondrousova, and Sorana Cîrstea to become the youngest Brit to reach the fourth round in the Open Era.

Unfortunately, she was forced to retire from the match due to breathing difficulties, but took it all in her stride, gaining an international reputation as a tennis superstar with a promising career ahead of her.
