About Rahul Mandal...
Dr Rahul Mandal is an Indian-born, part-time baker, best known for being the sweet-natured and determined contestant who won the famous show The Great British Bake Off back in 2018. Rahul’s shyness and self-depreciation made him memorable and led to him being adored by fans, amassing a large and loyal following.
Rahul’s passion for baking arose when he moved to England as an immigrant from India at the age of 23 to pursue a university scholarship that he had earned. He decided to apply for the show to help him grow his confidence and incredibly went on to win it, claiming that it was the “coolest” thing that he has ever done.
After his success on the show, Rahul returned to his day job as a nuclear research scientist at the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Department. Being an ambassador, Rahul wants to inspire as many children as possible to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This involves Rahul hosting talks with youngsters, where he encourages them to consider the career path that he took.
Rahul still bakes often, more so as a hobby now, and he takes to Instagram to share his dishes and cakes that he’s made. He likes to link his crafts to his science saying that baking is just a combination of physics, engineering, and chemistry, being one of the reasons he enjoys it so much.
Recently, Rahul baked a world-record cake, being the first cake to include one hundred different ingredients. More impressively, each ingredient originated from a different country around the world, and he even styled the cake to look like suitcases stacked on top of one another with a world globe on top, weighing over an incredible 50Kg and standing over three foot tall.
Adding on to his passion for food, Rahul has a monthly food column in The Times newspaper, where he writes different home-made recipes, from baking cakes to saucing up curries, allowing the reader to have a clear step-by-step guide to have a go themselves.
