About Max McMurdo...
Max McMurdo is a British designer, upcycler, entrepreneur, and television presenter renowned for transforming discarded materials into stylish, functional pieces. After earning a degree in Product Design and Visualisation from Bournemouth University in 2000, McMurdo began his career as a car designer in Cologne, Germany. Inspired by Germany's advanced recycling culture, he returned to the UK to establish Reestore Ltd in 2003, aiming to create high-end furniture from waste destined for landfill.
In 2007, McMurdo appeared on BBC's Dragons' Den, securing investment from Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis. This support propelled Reestore into the spotlight, leading to collaborations with major brands like The Body Shop and installations for Google's offices worldwide. Notable creations include chairs made from shopping trolleys and sofas fashioned from roll-top baths.
McMurdo's television career includes appearances on Channel 4's George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, Kirstie's Fill Your House for Free, and ITV's £10k Holiday Home. He also presents Tool Club on Channel 4 and has featured in Shed of the Year. Through these platforms, he advocates for sustainable living and demonstrates innovative upcycling techniques.
Beyond television, McMurdo is committed to community and environmental initiatives. He developed BOTL BLOX, a building material made from plastic bottles and cardboard, to provide low-cost insulation in schools, particularly in Africa. Additionally, he converted a caravan into the "souper van" to distribute food and essentials to the homeless in Bedford.
McMurdo shares his expertise through books like Upcycling: 20 Creative Projects Made from Reclaimed Materials and Upcycling Outdoors. His work continues to inspire individuals to embrace sustainability and creativity in design.
